confessionsShopNew stilettos, a fabulous Coach bag, a faux fur jacket – advertisers say we can have all this and more with that shiny plastic credit card… or maybe several of them. And time and time again, our culture has fallen victim to that trap. Never mind that we can’t afford these things, don’t truly need them, and don’t have anywhere to store them. We got the “cash back” and travel points. Plus, it’s “normal” to be in debt. Everyone else is, so who cares? Thus begins the vicious cycle we call consumer debt.

But knowing that our consumer debt can ultimately lead to business failures, foreclosures, divorce, bankruptcy, and even suicide, it is time that we have more voices speaking “enough is enough – there is a better way.”

The true call for change must begin with personal responsibility. That’s why I love Confessions of a Shopaholic (now out on DVD!). We are enlightened both about the scary potential consequences of out-of-control credit card spending and the way out of the debt cycle – all within the context of a funny romantic comedy. Dissecting Deeper Themes in ‘Pelham 123′

pelhamposter2I really enjoyed discussing the deeper themes in the new Denzel Washington and John Travolta, about two men who face off and stand divided on what is right and wrong in one crazy train ride.

I shared my own ‘train’ of thought with Positive Hit Radio The Current. My buddy, radio personality Liz Lane, and I talked in particular about the issues of sin and redemption that are heavily prevalent in this Columbia/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer release from director Tony Scott.

Giving the thumbs-up for "Up" in my 3-D glasses.

Giving the thumbs-up for "Up" in my 3-D glasses.

Almost a month passed between the press conference for Up and the day I finally got to see it on the silver screen. Since there was no sneak peek screening in my local area, I went and saw the new Disney/Pixar animated film on opening weekend as a regular moviegoer.

I was surprised when I learned the price per ticket for the Disney Digital 3-D version was $13. (There is a 2-D version, but why settle for that one? You don’t get the full experience.) Despite the steep price, I paid, got my 3-D glasses and found a seat amongst the many families with children. I expected to see more adults, even couples, but apparently animated movies – unless they are Anime – tend to bring in the kiddies.

When we all donned our glasses – which very much resembled the thick, black version worn by our movie hero, Carl – you could hear the audible gasps as the children saw cartoon characters leaping what felt like mere feet in front of their eyes. The adults were typically more reserved. Me? I was gasping along with the little tikes! Read more »

New Disney/Pixar Animated Release

New Disney/Pixar Animated Release

Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios’ latest animated release, Up, which opens nationwide Friday, May 29, is sure to be yet another enjoyable ride – an adventurous balloon ride, that is.

As the 10th film in Pixar’s history, Up, presented in Disney Digital 3DTM, follows the life of curmudgeonly 78-year-old retired balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen. After losing the love of his life and nearly losing his home too, Carl chooses to fulfill his life-long dream by tying balloons to his house and heading to the jungles of South America. But along the way, Carl must come to terms with a stowaway: 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer Russell. Through wild and funny adventures and the ups-and-downs of this relationship with the clueless young boy, Carl learns to live again and open up his heart to love.

The film’s director, Pete Docter, who made his directorial debut with Monsters, Inc., talked to the press recently about this fun-filled adventure and where he got this idea to cast a senior citizen as the main hero, a decision that goes against the grain of the typical ‘youth sells’ Hollywood mentality. Star Trek

Star Trek

We haven’t seen a Trek film since 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis. This film marks the 11th Trek film to hit the silver screen.

It’s another sci-fi flick that is returning to origins. We saw it years ago in Star Wars Episode I, then Batman Begins, and even in last week’s opening of Wolverine. And now J. J. Abrams is doing the same thing by getting back to the beginning of Trek lore. Read more »

Angels & Demons

Angels & Demons

The newly released Angels & Demons effectively beat out Star Trek, bringing in 48 million in box office revenue its first weekend. The film marks the second of Dan Brown’s novels to make it to the silver screen. The first was 2006’s smash hit the Da Vinci Code.

Now, with Angels & Demons, we see Tom Hanks again in his role as Harvard symbolist Robert Langdon. This time he is headed to the Vatican. The pope has died and the Cardinals must prepare a conclave to choose the next successor. When the Illuminati capture the top four potential candidates – or Preferatti – and threaten to kill each man at a certain time and locale across Rome, Dr. Langdon teams up with physicist Vittoria Vetra from Switzerland to solve the clues and end the violence, effectively saving all of Rome from destruction and allowing the Vatican to pick the right man to lead the Catholic church at large.
